Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes

“Each picture in Armed America could be a pro-gun advertisement - or an anti-gun poster. That’s what makes the book so riveting.”

A fantastic set of pictures showing how much gun culture is part of everyday life for some people. Despite the obvious left-wing bias (you can immediately see the photographer was aiming to shock viewers by portraying gun owners as nut-jobs, with their guns set up on display all over their house, when in reality those people with guns would probably lock them up when not in use), they are a fascinating and thought provoking set of portraits.

But as they say sensationalism sells, and I’m sure the author wouldn’t be able to shift half as many books if they were just pictures of people down the local gun range.

Edit: updated post thanks to clarifying helpful comments. Check out the YouTube links for an insightful accompanying audio track by the author.

I don’t understand something. If someone was coming over to your house to take a picture of you with your gun collection wouldn’t you actually take your guns out so you can be photographed with them? Not having them out would sort of defeat the purpose of having your portrait taken with your guns.

BTW: the author is also a gun owner. Just so you know.

The name of the book is “Portraits of Gun Owners in Their HOMES” not “candid photos of gun owners down at the local gun range,” so I don’t think that the photographer is trying to shock people by presenting the gun owners in a fairly formal setting with their firearms displayed and labeled. The interiors are a part of what makes each photo so distinct and fascinating — conveying a sense of who these people are. In fact, in many of the photos, you don’t even notice the firearms until you’ve considered the photo for several minutes and let your eyes wander through the rooms. I can’t see that a series of photographs taken at the gun range would be as visually fascinating or would convey as much about the subject.

Utter nonsense. I’m a gun owner (Not just as a hunter, as a I’ll-own-any-gun-I-want-including-evil-black-machine-guns), and I know the author. A very close friend of mine, who is also a gun owner of the same sort, is *in* the book. Kyle did nothing of the sort.

Hi Chris - thanks for your comment.

To me, as a non-gun owner living in England, these pictures are kind of surreal, as we don’t really have such a prevalent gun culture in our mainstream society, and very rarely come into contact with them, so their immediate connotations are usually negative.

My original post was the reaction to the pictures on the website I had linked to, and I obviously had not heard or found the audio, which really gives great background to the pictures.

While you haven’t changed my personal opinion of guns generally (I don’t like them), you have certainly put me right as to my interpretation of the pictures and why they were taken, and I have edited my post accordingly (but left what I had written for context!).

I would strongly advise people to listen to the audio tracks - it contains the voices of the people in the photographs, and makes for fascinating listening. Thanks!

Hi Jennifer and Phanatic,

You obviously posted comments while I was editing my post and writing my reply to Chris - thanks both for commenting.

I agree with you both, and have edited my post accordingly. Obviously I saw the pictures out of context, and combined with the audio track they are really enlightening to me - an insight into another culture. Thanks for educating me!

Thanks for posting about Armed America. It was my intention from the start to create a platform whereby people could have a discussion about important topics and to try and be as unbiased as possible in doing so. I think it’s been a success, based on responses from both pro and anti-gun reviewers. (There are some reviews on http://www.armedamerica.org though I have a feeling those sorts of things are really only interesting to the author.)

There are plenty of photos of people at ranges shooting guns, nobody remembers them though. They fill the pages of gun magazines and are largely unremarkable for a few reasons. I chose to photograph people in their homes because I wanted to show who people were, not just that they were gun owners.

Thanks again for posting,

Kyle

Al,

Just so you know, I’m not a gun owner and I actually come down on the much more restrictive side of the fence. The problem is that gun ownership is such a deep part our culture that I don’t actually believe we’ll ever actually be rid of the things. Its not because Americans are any more stupid or violent than anyone else. Its just its part of the mythos that we were raised on. You can’t get rid of the guns until we redefine what being American means.

Understanding the history of the US - especially the myths we tell ourselves (horatio alger, the rugged individual, the cowboy, the call of the frontier, one man standing tall, etc etc etc) makes it a *little* more understandable but if you don’t grow up with it then it will always seem, on some level, utterly perplexing.

It’s rare a blogger will so honestly admit they are wrong. Thanks for taking a second look at Mr. Cassidy’s book.

I think it’s interesting how much more comment activity this post has generated than most of your posts buddy. Yee ha!

Yeah - think its because I usually post about things with a small audience (i.e. tecchie things not many people care about!) as opposed to this, which is a potentially far wider reaching topic on which people have much stronger views. It certainly generated far more interesting comments than usual!
